Delhi Capitals entered IPL 2026 with genuine optimism. But now, just past the halfway point of the league stage, they find themselves in Jaipur carrying the weight of a team that has lost its way. The manner of their recent defeats makes it worse — posting a mammoth 264 against Punjab Kings and still coming out on the losing side, then capitulating for a meagre 75 just 48 hours later. Somewhere between those two extremes, their confidence and cohesion have quietly unravelled. At a stage in the season when teams typically shift into a higher gear, Delhi are instead scrambling to rediscover their footing.
The timing of Mitchell Starc’s return could not be more welcome. Cleared to play from May 1, the Australian left-armer brings more than just his considerable ability to the table — he brings a jolt of energy to a dressing room that badly needs one. Delhi will require every bit of that spark, because Rajasthan Royals are no soft landing. This is the side that recently handed table-topping Punjab Kings their first loss of the season, making them a stern and unforgiving test for any team still finding its form.
There is a compelling subplot embedded within this fixture as well — one that carries the unmistakable flavour of a generational encounter. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, just 15 years old and already the most talked-about story of the season, has handled the best fast bowlers in the world with a maturity that seems to belong to a far older player. He has seen off Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Josh Hazlewood without appearing remotely flustered. Starc, however, offers something different — a steep left-arm angle and late swing that poses a fresh set of questions. Rajasthan will also take encouragement from another source: the fact that Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey closed out their win in Mullanpur suggests their batting depth now extends well beyond the top order.
Delhi’s difficulties, though, are not resolved simply by Starc pulling on his jersey again. The search for a settled opening partnership has become something of an obsession, with each new combination raising as many concerns as it addresses. Sahil Parakh’s debut was over almost before it began — a piercing Bhuvneshwar inswinger ending his innings after just two deliveries — and it would be a shame if that brief, brutal cameo defined the 18-year-old’s entire IPL experience. Abishek Porel showed genuine spark when introduced as an Impact Player substitute, but moving him up to open alongside KL Rahul would simply mean another reshuffle in a long line of them.
Amid all this uncertainty, Starc’s availability feels more like a morale boost than a structural solution. Delhi Capitals will still need to look inward and answer the harder questions for themselves.
